Our field is special!
Observability is a specialisation at the intersection of software development, operations, cloud, networks, data and security. It involves instrumenting systems and correlating their signals — traces, metrics, logs and profiles — to understand what is really happening, including incidents that nobody anticipated.
It sits at the heart of Ops, DevOps, SRE, Platform Engineering and DevSecOps teams, in constant dialogue with ITSM. Observability informs decisions; service management turns those insights into action, better incident handling and continuous improvement.
This specialisation is still rarely taught as a profession in its own right. It is learned through curiosity, experimentation, field experience and knowledge sharing among experts. That is what makes it demanding, vibrant and especially useful.
